Author : Stephen G. Bloom Publisher : St. A round, luminescent pearl is the simplest and most perfect gem. Columbus sought—and found—this precious jewel coveted by his Spanish sovereigns, sparking popularity throughout Europe. And designer Coco Chanel raised them to new heights, bringing pearls— fake and real—to women everywhere. In Tears of Mermaids, Stephen G. Bloom travels 30, miles in an effort to trace a single pearl—from the moment a diver off the coast of Australia scoops an oyster containing a single luminescent pearl from the ocean floor to the instant a woman fastens the clasp of a strand containing the same orb.

Bloom chronicles the never-before-told saga of the global pearl trade by gaining access to clandestine outposts in China, the Philippines, French Polynesia and Australia. He infiltrates high-tech pearl farms guarded by gun-toting sentries, farms for pearls in rural China, and even goes backstage at Christie's for a fast and furious auction of the most expensive pearl ever sold. Teeming with rogue humor and uncanny intelligence, Tears of Mermaids weaves a nonstop detective story whose main character is the world's most enduring jewel.

Dive into centuries of mermaid lore with these captivating tales from around the world. A Penguin Classic Among the oldest and most popular mythical beings, mermaids and other merfolk have captured the imagination since long before Ariel sold her voice to a sea witch in the beloved Disney film adaptation of Hans Christian Andersen's "The Little Mermaid.

More than two thousand years later, the gullible New York public lined up to witness a mummified "mermaid" specimen that the enterprising showman P. Barnum swore was real. The Penguin Book of Mermaids is a treasury of such tales about merfolk and water spirits from different cultures, ranging from Scottish selkies to Hindu water-serpents to Chilean sea fairies. A third of the selections are published here in English for the first time, and all are accompanied by commentary that explores their undercurrents, showing us how public perceptions of this popular mythical hybrid--at once a human and a fish--illuminate issues of gender, spirituality, ecology, and sexuality.

Is the power of the mermaid chair only a myth? Our volume is a compilation of succinct and insightful extracts from the literature of mermaids, and also some of our favorite images of mermaids.

Heath Robinson. In this compilation of three separately published works, three mermaids in the Kingdom of Neptunia, Shyanna, Rachel, and Cora, suffer the same problems of growing up as teenagers everywhere. Author : A. Some things you just can't say, even to your parents. Don't say it. Not if you're a boy. You gotta keep it inside. Maybe thirteen-year-old Todd Winslow is the best diver at summer camp. If only diving could save him.

Underwater is a much kinder world, a secret mermaid world that no one else can know about - not Dad, and definitely not Brad, the camp's numero uno bad boy. Todd tries to fit in, playing nice with flirty model-wannabe Sylvie and shunning nature-nerd Olivia - but you can only fool people for so long.

Brad is watching every move, ready to expose all that's different about Todd. Then there's the doll thing. As your choice of faction is purely cosmetic, it means you can focus on bettering your skills rather that worrying if you've selected the weaker faction. Even more interesting is Funcom's choice to do away with traditional levels and classes.

Your avatar is defined by his abilities. The way you play is reflected in your skills. It leads to organic gaming where you are no longer constricted by a poor choice in the beginning. The developers are also hoping it'll narrow the gap between new players and veterans.

Chuck in player-made organisations that go by the name of cabals i. Age of Conan struggled with social interaction and it's good to see they're attempting to rectify their mistake. That's not saying you'll be forced to interact, the game has plenty for the solo player.

Leaderboards and the implementation of social networks are planned - another way to let you keep track of your character's progress. But perhaps the best thing I about The Secret World is it links to our reality. While there are plenty of mythical beasts and supernatural attacks, you'll be fighting through the streets of recognisable cities. Abandoned cars, decrepit petrol stations, and rusting scrap yards give the impression that this is a world in decay.

On top of that, the scope for expansion is unfathomable. Our world alone is huge and that's before Funcom start being all creative. So much so that EA wanted an enhanced version put out. Rather than going for a fantasy setting, steampunk setting or some kind of futuristic setting. The Secret World actually has a pretty contemporary setting. However, in this world, the world of myths, horror, and legends are creeping through! Vampires, zombies, werewolves and many more evil creatures are causing havoc.

Rather than just making up locations, The Secret World has gone for using actual real world locations. So you will be going to places like London, Tokyo, and New York.

They have done a great job in putting these places in the game, but the way the creatures have caused havoc and twisted them is actually really cool. The Secret World is very story driven and if you ask me the game is actually better when you strike out on your own. Once you have created your character which is a lot of fun to do you will have a choice of one of three different secret societies that you can work for.

You will go around the world to deal with the monsters that are causing trouble. However, the secret society that you join will ultimately dictate how you deal with them. You will either be looking to get rid of them, move them to a new location or even exploit them depending on what one of the secret societies you have joined. The Secret World always has a list of things for you to be doing. The game is actually really good at letting you know what to do. So while you may stumble on some quests and fights on your own, you are never left too long to wonder what the heck you are supposed to do.

Combat is one of the best aspects of The Secret World. The combat is more fast paced than you would expect from a game of this style.
